Meet Our Suppliers - Nutcessity

WHO ARE YOU? WHAT’S YOUR STORY, HOW & WHY DID YOU GET INTO THE BUSINESS?

Hi! I’m Mike, from Warwick, and I’ve had a peanut allergy for as long as I can remember. After studying in Australia and finding a total lack of healthy, delicious and peanut-free nut butters in the UK, I decided to start my own business in 2016 after I finished my business degree.

WHAT MAKES THE BUSINESS A COOL PLACE TO BE

I work from Ubley, Somerset, a beautiful area overlooking Blagdon Lake and a 2-minute drive from Yeo Valley HQ. Due to such high demand and a lack of cash, I stopped making the nut butters myself a year ago; they’re now made by my production partner in England.

IF YOU WEREN’T RUNNING THE BUSINESS WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING

I think I’d enjoy being a postie – I love walking and being outdoors!

WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON

3 new flavours coming up in 2021, plus a brand new website, a crowdfunding campaign (on Seedrs – watch this space) and my first recruit – the most exciting part.

WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT

I used to work for Abel & Cole (knocking doors) and also a health food shop for 3 years in Bristol; meaning I had some super useful experience when I first started developing the idea of Nutcessity. I must have had thousands of conversations with customers, colleagues, suppliers, even before I sold a single jar.

BEST MOMENT

Ooof. So hard to answer! I’d say receiving lovely comments and feedback; it probably sounds boring but it’s an ongoing thing. I’m more for the process than one single moment. Any small appreciative remark means a lot.

A VALUABLE LESSON

Sleep on big decisions, and always ask for help.

RECOMMEND SOMETHING

I love this question!! Now go take a cold shower.

WHAT OR WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION AND WHY?

James Anderson – he’s a pace bowler for England and Lancashire cricket. He’s overcome lots of set-backs and is still going strong at 38 (old in the sporting world). And I love his dry, get-on-with-it sense of humour.

THINGS YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT

Cricket, walking, dogs, warm coats and my Starling banking app.

FAVOURITE MEAL OR GO TO SNACK

I love a good Mexican. Tacos, rice, avocado, refried beans, salsa… the works.

WHAT SONG WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADD TO THE FARM PLAYLIST

Slow Burn by Kacey Musgraves

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE FARM STRATFORD?

I remember driving round from Warwick a couple of years ago and speaking with some of your team; they were welcoming and so excited about this whole new venture! I’ve really enjoyed doing tastings with you in the past and I’d love to again. And the setting – beautiful. Your farm shop somehow feels big but also cosy.
